Middlesex residents of 1917 a1ways were ready and willing to contribute to the war effort, both in moral and funds. One community act was to purchase $500 worth of firearms, which were kept in the Dune1len Armory for the use of the home guards. The Home Defense League sought this contribution when they appeared before the Mayor and Borough Council on Juno 6, 1917, asking assistance to equip guards with uniforms, firearms and ammunition. For each $100 the home guards raised on there own, they were told, the council would appropriate an equal sum, which, it was stipulated, would be used for firearms and would remain the property of Middlesex taxpayers. Maximum appropriation was set at $500. Three months later, representatives of the league returned to the council for their $500 after raising $600 themselves.
